The Puritan Twins Lucy Fitch Perkins 9781492182085 Books

I read this book to my 7 year old daughter, and we both enjoyed the experience. Although this book was written in the 1920s, it almost entirely reads as up-to-date. The story is well paced and has plenty of action. And it's a fun way to learn a bit about the puritans/pilgrims after they were well established in the New World.

The story centers on two puritan children and their parents. It not only gives a good glimpse of their everyday lives, but involves adventurous undertakings - including two unfriendly Indians. I especially liked that the author gets inside the heads of the puritans, discussing their faith and how they were able to justify slavery in their own minds. Parents of boys will also appreciate that the young son is shown twice as a hero.

Parents should be aware that the family does buy a slave boy. We don't see the purchase, but the father brings home the child. He and his wife do talk about showing kindness to the boy and how terrified he must be after being taken from his family. The word "ni**er" is used once - as it would have been during colonial days. I simply used this as a way to educate my child on that word and how inappropriate it is. (If you are reading the book to your child, you could simply edit the text, if desired.) Parents should also know that Indians (as they are called) are mostly shown as a potential threat (as they, indeed, were). Politically correct this book is not. However, it shows life as it was during the period.

We read this book off my Kindle (it is free on Amazon), but I may actually purchase an original edition because the Kindle version lacks any illustrations.

Overall: A fast, fun read with plenty of opportunities to learn about history. I recommend it!

This edition in the Twins series was rather confrontational for me to read. Unless you have a keen interest in the old days when racism was rampant, I'd suggest you avoid this particular one. But on the whole, it is a very good insight into just how the newly arrived Christians saw the new world and its inhabitants.
Great!
a great read
Great book (fiction) for kids to learn about history. My 10 year old daughter loved it. I'm so glad it's available on !
Love reading about by-gone days and this book
fit right in. The struggles of life then were so hard.
This book should be on all school reading lists.
My kids "inhale" these twin books. This one was enjoyed just like all the others
