This was an interesting enough read, but it just didn't grab me. The book is nicely written, although I have to say that there are several editing errors. Fortunately, these errors, despite being numerous and noticeable, didn't distract me from the story to any real degree. Furthermore, IMO, Ms. Yates did a good job with her characters. They are all well developed, three dimensional, and relatable. This is true, not only of the protagonists, but also the secondary characters, especially Jeremiah's siblings and his best friend and employee, Patrick, who will be the hero in the second book in the series, A Reason to Believe (The Healing Hearts Book 2). I believe Ms. Yates is a fairly new author, but I really couldn't tell from reading this book. She writes this story with a maturity usually only encountered with authors with a lot more experience.

There really isn't anything wrong with this book, it just didn't hook me, if you know what I mean. Hence the 3 star rating, and really I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if Amazon allowed 1/2 star ratings. I liked the story, and while I was reading, it held my attention. But the minute I had to put it aside to complete some task or household chore, I was easily able to do so, and then it would take me a while before I went back to the book. There were a couple of times when I went whole days without reading it at all! Usually when I'm reading a book, I keep reading until I'm FORCED to stop reading. I prop up my Kindle and read while washing dishes, doing laundry, and even making the beds...you get my point, I'm sure. LOL In this instance, I'd put the book aside, with minimal, if any, reluctance, take care of my task, and then move on to something else, rather than go back to reading.

As far as my impression of the book, I have to say that the Christian aspect is very heavy-handed. There are whole bible passages quoted throughout the story; and I don't just mean where one character is quoting a verse or two to another character, although that does happen. What I mean is, if we are told a character is reading the bible, the passage he/she is reading is quoted by the narrator for the reader's edification. Honestly, there were parts of this story which smacked me as being borderline preachy. I read a lot of Inspirational romance novels, and I find that usually, as far as the Christian aspect is concerned, they fall into one of three categories. Heavy, medium, and light. I personally prefer my Christian romances to have a more moderate to light hand. Books such as this one, where there is constant praying, quoting of the bible, and discussions about God, IMO fall into the "heavy" category. There's nothing wrong with it; it's just not for everyone. But then I dare you to name one book, *any* book, that is for everyone. Unfortunately, not even the bible can claim that honor.

In any event, although the Christianity is heavy-handed, Ms. Yates does a commendable job of interweaving the religious aspect throughout the story, so it avoids having that "preachy" feel, although, as I said earlier, there are parts which, IMO, came close. The only real complaint I have about the book--and really it's not a complaint, more like an observation--is that there were a couple of times where the tone of the story took on a somewhat juvenile feel. Specifically, the scene where Nicole meets Maryann; and another where the reader gets to see Maryann and Patrick together for the first time. Maryann is the daughter of the new pastor who has just moved to town. She is also the heroine in the next book, "Reason to Believe", and is Patrick's lady love in that story. IMO, those scenes had a more young adult feel to them, that was totally out of sync with the overall tone of the story up until that point. The instant connection between the forceful Maryann and Nicole, whereby she immediately shortens Nicole's name to Nicky, the giggling women, and the bickering between Maryann and Patrick; let's just say I was glad when all that was behind me. I didn't really care for it, and thankfully, it didn't last long.

Overall this was a nice read for me; not gripping, but nice. If I could, I would rate it 3 1/2 stars. FYI, I'm sure I don't need to mention this, but just in case, this is a squeaky clean romance...as in the only kissing you see is on the cheek and that's between Jeremiah and Nicole AFTER they marry. LOL If you really enjoy Inspirational romance novels, and you don't mind a heavy dose of Christianity in your stories, then this book is definitely worth a read. I admit I cried when Jeremiah performed the minor surgery on the broken leg...it was just that touching to me for some unknown reason! I do intend to read Patrick and Maryann's story, but I need a little break before I move on to book 2. Happy reading!

A Reason to Hope edition by Stephanie Yates Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This story is filled with Christian truths as well as family love and heartache. It seems that God is guiding these Montana people along a day by day existence. Jeremiah and Nicole get signals mixed but love wins out. The storyline is compelling and I could not wait to get the next book in series.
Another book by Stephanie Yates that is one of my favorites. It is a page turner, tho , I have it on kindle from . She didnt just have one subject or character, but they all jived so well. It is a book of Truth, Jesus, and such high quality of morals that you can read with confidence that she wont slip something in, in bad taste. I would tell all who love a good book of the old days to get this one. Jan
What a wonderful book. A great Christian story full of love and forgiveness. The characters are so endearing and believable. So many examples were used to explain God's forgiveness and love. I can't wait to read the sequel. I already ordered it. I'm sure I will be awake through the night finishing the book. I hope Stephanie continues this with many more books to come. It would be amazing to read of Jeremiahs brothers and sisters lives and Cassandra and many more. Thank you for gifting me this book. I guarantee it will not be a waste of your time to read her books.
This was really a good book. The characters were interesting and inspiring, and the plot was good. There was enough conflict to make you keep turning pages, but not so much that you felt wrung out by the end of the book. In fact, I read this on Unlimited, and then went back and purchased the book, because it's something I know I could read over again. It left me with a good feeling. The ending had a cliffhanger, but still had a good conclusion. I bought the second book in the series, too, and read it in one sitting. Now I'm hoping Ms. Yates will hurry up and finish the next one. -)
Loved the story. It's been awhile since I've read a free book and liked it enough to go online and purchase the next one in the series!! Just be careful you will have to spend money to buy the rest of her books!! If you like Christian based romances and happy endings then this is a great book to read!! My only problem right now is waiting on the next book in the series!! ;)
I purchased this book as I had purchased the 2nd in the series & prefer to read books in order. I love how this author develops her characters & how they fly off the pages, i feel like i am a fly on the wall in their homes rather than reading about them...which is always a good thing.. I loved nichole from the very first & was delighted to see her dreams come true. As i am writing this review i have finished both books, & i have to say that i didn't find the cliffhanger at the end of this one as much as i found it at the end of the second. I love the development of the characters from this book to the next.
there is some small editing errors but not enough to annoy you or to take away from the story, in fact i go so engrossed in the story that there could have been more & i didn't notice them.
I will be putting Ms Yates on my watch list as I can't wait to see how she developes the rest of her characters & i can't wait to read their stories.
I started this book twice and both times had to give it up. There's this major plot point I just couldn't get past. Cassandra accuses Jeremiah of attempted rape. Then, in front of witnesses, she recants when Nicole says she heard the whole thing from the loft. I repeat In front of witnesses, Jeremiah's name is cleared. Why on earth, then, is he later told he has to go on public trial to clear the charges? His name has already been cleared, in front of witnesses! What a stupid town to demand a public hearing, and what a contrived way to get Jeremiah and Cassandra together. I deleted the book from my library.
